Wilma Burgess (1939-2003) singing “Sweet Promises” on the Wilburn Brothers Show. Burgess was a lesbian who usually refused to sing love songs that did not leave the gender of the lover ambiguous, although she would sometimes make exceptions as long as her producer promised to also let her pick a song he didn’t like as well. LGBT activists in Jamaica made news in recent weeks for creating a public service announcement about LGBT rights, but they’ve faced roadblocks in getting the ad to air on television.
The PSA features a Jamaican beauty queen talking about her gay brother. A Jamaican TV station recently refused to air it. JustOut quotes the Jamaica Observer:
Milton Gregory, executive secretary for Jamaica Union Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, was quoted as saying that “The ad itself can become repulsive for many people in society.” …
“As innocuous and as innocent as that public service announcement might appear, it is part of a wider plan by militant homosexuals to gradually desensitise Jamaicans to homosexuality, so that homosexual behaviour and practice can become mainstream in Jamaica,” he said.
I truly hope this eventually makes it to television - it’s pretty powerful. Watch the PSA here.

Of the victims murdered, 70% were people of color, and 44% were transgender women. “Communities of color and transgender communities are particularly impacted by murder because they face multiple forms of discrimination based upon their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression,” the report indicates. Both transgender people and people of color were also the groups least likely to receive medical attention for their injuries. People who identified as both transgender and of color were almost two and a half times as likely to experience discrimination than white, non-transgender individuals.
